Happy New Moon in Scorpio and Martinmas or Laternelaufen
In this edition we dive into the traditions associated with Martinmas as well as explore rituals for this month in preparation for Spring 2024.
Hello dear one,
I write to you today when the moon is at her darkest, yet we’re bounded on days either side which are filled with light. Martinmas, also known as Laternelaufen, is a festival of lanterns which falls on 11 November. Also on this day each year many people in the UK may also light a candle to remember those who lost their lives in past (and current) wars.
The Hindu festival of Diwali on 12 November also comes at a meaningful time, signifying “victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance”1 ~ a poignant objective in times of international conflict and uncertainty.
And lastly, on 12 to 13 November the Taurids meteor shower reaches its annual peak in the Northern hemisphere offering us the opportunity to bathe in cosmic light and wonder (cloud-cover permitting!). I’ll delve into some of these themes, offer some journalling prompts for the Scorpio New Moon and suggest a nature connection ritual for November later in this edition.
